New Releases - November 2012

Well October was one long-ass month, wasn't it?  I am glad it's over.  I am not glad at how few releases are coming out this November, but maybe I'll use the time to read some more from my tbr pile.  LOL

I'm not really one for holiday themed books, so I was glad to see only one Christmas-y book, the Mary Balogh.  And I'm actually looking forward to reading it.  Strange!

Did we miss any books that you're looking forward to?

An Infamous Marriage by Susanna Fraser
Published by Carina Press
Northumberland, 1815

At long last, Britain is at peace, and General Jack Armstrong is coming home to the wife he barely knows. Wed for mutual convenience, their union unconsummated, the couple has exchanged only cold, dutiful letters. With no more wars to fight, Jack is ready to attempt a peace treaty of his own.

Elizabeth Armstrong is on the warpath. She never expected fidelity from the husband she knew for only a week, but his scandalous exploits have made her the object of pity for years. Now that he's back, she has no intention of sharing her bed with him—or providing him with an heir—unless he can earn her forgiveness. No matter what feelings he ignites within her...

Jack is not expecting a spirited, confident woman in place of the meek girl he left behind. As his desire intensifies, he wants much more than a marriage in name only. But winning his wife's love may be the greatest battle he's faced yet.
Genre: Historical Romance
Series: n/a

Nath: Ohhh, this book sounds really interesting! I remember there was quite a buzz about Ms Fraser's books last year and so, she was on my list of authors to try. Of course, I didn't... guess I need to remedy that ASAP! :)

Ames:  I did read her first book and bought the second.  I really enjoyed Susanna's writing and this one sounds good!  I love this story line.

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Series: Elder Races, Book #5

Nath: I enjoyed Dragon Bound and I find Ms Harrison's idea of re-visiting Dragos and Pia after their HEA ending intriguing :) However, what convinced me was the excerpt of Lord's Fall that I read at the end of Oracle's Moon. Gotta say, it sounds good!

Monroe: I really like this series so I cant wait for this one to come out!

Ames:  I recently just read Storm's Heart....so I'm slowly catching up!  But I am looking forward to more Pia and Dragos!!!!!

The Perfect Hope by Nora Roberts
Published by Berkley
The Montgomery brothers and their eccentric mother are breathing new life into the town of Boonsboro, Maryland, by restoring its historic hotel. And they’re finding their own lives revamped by love. This is Ryder’s story... Ryder is the hardest Montgomery brother to figure out — with a tough-as-nails outside and possibly nothing too soft underneath. He’s surly and unsociable, but when he straps on a tool belt, no woman can resist his sexy swagger. Except apparently Hope Beaumont, the innkeeper of his own Inn BoonsBoro. And though the Inn is running smoothly, thanks to Hope’s experience and unerring instincts, her big-city past is about to make an unwelcome — and embarrassing — appearance. Seeing Hope vulnerable stirs up Ryder’s emotions and makes him realize that while Hope may not be perfect, she just might be perfect for him...
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Boonsboro Inn, Book #3

Nath: I really enjoy Ms Roberts' contemporary romance :) The Boonsboro Inn trilogy is not her best, but still satisfying. Looking forward to see how she's going to wrap everything up. I like Ryder's surly attitude and his interactions with Hope so far have been quite interesting LOL. Gotta say though, I don't like the cover of The Perfect Hope. The colors are too blend :(

Ames:  I'm buying this series up for my mom, but I haven't been feeling compelled to read them.  I think I'm still just stuck on The Witness.  LOL

Rescue My Heart by Jill Shalvis

For Holly and Adam, each with their ghosts, a trek this desperate, this unpredictable, and this intimate, will have its share of risks—including opening their hearts one more time.
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Animal Magnetism, Book #3

Nath: I'm skipping this one. I haven't enjoyed the two previous books and based on the blurb and reviews I've seen, this one won't do it for me. However, I wanted to say the dog was cute :P

Monroe: As always Nath and I are opposites...I love Jill and I REALLY love this series! Im counting down the days!

Ames:  I love Jill too and this series with the animals is icing on the best freaking cake ever.  I do like cake.  :P

Monroe: YUMMY COVER!

Ames:  OMG OMG OMG I have been super anxious to get this one.  I felt like October would NEVER end.  Of course I pre-ordered this forever ago and now it's just a waiting game with the mailbox.  LOL  The mailbox always holds my packages hostages.  It's in cahoots with the devil.  Anyway, I can't wait to read this!

Series: One Night of Passion, Book #1

Ames:  I know I didn't care for Beth's serial Because You Are Mine, but I do like her full length novels and I've seen some positive reviews of this book already.  I'm looking forward to reading it.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Alaskan Nights, Book #2

Nath: This book is on my radar. I read the prequel, Baby, It's Cold Outside, last year and it was okay. So I'm going to be looking for reviews and if Come Fly with Me can focus on the H/H, then perhaps I'll pick it up :)

Countess so Shameless by Liana LeFey
Published by Montlake Romance
No one can compete for Lady Mélisande’s coveted affections like the Italian rogue she met five years prior during a visit to Versailles. Her encounter with Lord Alessandro Orsini awakened a passion so fierce that the mere memory of it still ignites her senses. So when the celebrated rake resurfaces in London, Mélisande succumbs to temptation and shamelessly proposes an affair for the Season.

Alessandro has never forgotten the girl he met in Versailles—his perfect match. Though the fiercely independent lady has sworn off marriage, it doesn’t stop him from vowing to make her his wife. While seducing her body, he wages tender warfare on her heart’s defenses. But a bitter rival also burns to possess Mélisande, and luck has provided the means to bend her to his will: a scandalous secret that could ruin her. The price of his silence is nothing less than her hand in marriage, forcing Mélisande to choose between the desires of her heart and everything else she holds dear.
Genre: Historical Romance
Series: Scandal in London, Book  #1

Ames:  I like historical novels where the heroine is independent and doesn't care to marry.  Of course you know she will give into the lusty hero eventually, but that power struggle is what makes that plot so interesting.  This one definitely caught my eye.

Now he's lying tied and gagged on a cold, dark floor, with only one chance to escape before he ends up like the bones surrounding him... Assistant State's Attorney Daphne Montgomery is devastated by her son's disappearance, and is immediately convinced that his kidnapping is connected to the white supremacist she's just had jailed for murder. FBI Special Agent Joseph Carter isn't so sure - especially when he learns that Ford's girlfriend is also missing. Is Ford's abduction payback for Daphne's courtroom victory? Or is he a pawn in an even more dangerous game?
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Series: Baltimore, Book #3 - but loosely connected to all her other books

Nath: I can't wait for Did You Miss Me?!!!!! Similarly to Ms Rose's last couple of books, Did You Miss Me? is being released as a hardcover in the UK first... and I already have my copy pre-ordered :) If I remember correctly, the American release will be in paperback and is expected for February. Anyway, I was surprised that the main characters were going to be Ford and Daphne. I was actually expecting Clay and Stevie, but hey, if it means that Ms Rose is planning more books in Baltimore, I sure won't complain!! :) Especially it if means there might be another release not too far off in 2013. Yes, I know, I'm greedy. But what can I say? Ms Rose's romantic suspense books are among the best! :)

Ames:  This release has caught me by surprise...not that it should since I haven't read KR in forever. BUT maybe I'll start back up with this one!  Karen is an auto-buy author for me.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: The Kowalskis, Book  #5

Nath: Hmmm, I've been on a contemporary romance kick lately, but I'm not convinced about All He Ever Desired. In All He Ever Needed, I wasn't impressed by Ryan and one of my least favorite element in contemporary romance is teenagers with single parents. I don't mind about cute babies and toddlers, but teenagers? Plus, seems like the ex is still around? However, Brie said she enjoyed this one... so perhaps.

Ames:  Since her debut, I've been hearing good things about Shannon's books.  I haven't read her other books yet but this one sounds interesting.  I like reading about the one that got away.

The slavers’ operation, however, goes deeper than Richard knows, and even working together, Charlotte and Richard may not survive...
Genre: Fantasy
Series: The Edge, Book  #4

Nath: Honestly, I keep telling myself that I'll give up on this series, because I think it's not as good as Ms Andrews' Kate Daniels series. However, I always find myself picking the next book up because of the characters and the blurb. This one sounds interesting and I want to read more of Richard, the leader of the Mar clan. Also, I think this might be the last book... so might as well, right?

Nath: You know how big a fan I am of Ms Hooper right? So two new books in one year... Yep, I am over the moon LOL, especially since The First Prophet seems to be the beginning of a spin-off series from the FBI SCU series. Can't wait to get my hand on it!!

A Christmas Bride

The very wealthy Edgar Downes has promised his aging father to finally take a bride—specifically, to wed a titled lady by Christmas. But to trust the tender words on his lips, Judith must not only see past the hardness of his heart, but learn once again to trust her own heart’s desire.
Genre: Historical Romance
Series: n/a

Nath: I enjoy Ms Balogh's oldies and her Christmas books are usually quite enjoyable, so I'll be picking this one up for sure :)

Ames:  Me too!!  I am so glad they're re-releasing all her good oldies.  I wonder when The Notorious Rake is going to make it's reprint debut?

The Larkin sisters have tried for years to make the town forget the wild ways of their youths, but Alpine Sky Resort assistant manager Zoe Larkin can still feel the judgment, despite her guarded manner and sensible skirts. Jase Garrett made a name for himself as a world-class competitive skiier and won four Olympic medals. But the tragic death of his best friend nine years ago threw him off course, and the Rusty Wire is both his sanctuary and his hideaway, so he will never sell. No matter what.

Zoe goes back to the drawing board with a little assistance from her very attractive boss. But when Jase is the victim of arson, Zoe becomes the number one suspect. Has she sunk to new lows to gain a promotion? Or is she the victim, too?

Zoe and Jase must work together—very closely together—to clear her name, save the Rusty Wire, and see if the sparks fly as well in the bedroom as they do at the negotiating table.
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Larkin Sisters, Book #2

Nath: I'm not sure whether I'll pick up Gold Fire or not, but it's on my radar. I DNFed Silver Sparks because I hate all the bad rumors surrounding the Larkin sisters. They were so unfair and just frustrating. That's why I'm hesitant about Gold Fire... but an Olympic champion (well I'm assuming one of the medals was gold :P) as a hero, Ms Ambrose got me there :P

***

Sigh, I have a feeling I'll be hitting my TBR pile during this month and I might be climbing the walls and curtains in anticipation of new releases mid-way through November ^_^; It's been a while since there's been so little new releases... Any one that we missed and could add?

Pre-Release Discussion: Guardian Demon by Meljean Brook

Very Important Note: this post is filled with very significant spoilers for the Guardian series by Meljean Brook. If you haven’t read the books, don’t read it (it won’t make sense if you’re unfamiliar with it, so you’re not missing much).

Nath: If you’ve been around blogland in the past weeks, you’re probably aware that Meljean Brook finally unveiled the cover for her last book in her Guardian series, Guardian Demon. But the cover wasn’t alone, we also got a blurb. Brie from Romance Around the Corner, being a huge fan of the series, was so excited that she shot me an email wanting to discuss and do some guesswork about what might be happening in this final installment. She also had the bright idea to share this discussion with fellow fans and have you join us! So feel free to add your two cents on the comments!!

For those who have not yet seen the cover or read the blurb, here it is:

In this thrilling conclusion to the Guardian series, New York Times bestselling author Meljean Brook delivers another stunning page-turner, in which the fate of humanity depends upon a tortured warrior winning the trust—and heart—of the woman he wounded…

After a terrifying encounter in Hell destroys her trust in Michael, the Guardian’s powerful leader, former detective Andromeda Taylor is ready to call it quits as one of the angelic warriors and resume her human life again. But when demonic forces threaten her closest friends and she uncovers a terrifying plot devised by Lucifer, Taylor is thrown straight into Michael’s path again…

To defeat Lucifer, Michael needs every Guardian by his side—and he needs Taylor more than any other. The detective is the key to keeping his own demonic side at bay, and Michael will do anything to protect her and keep her close. And when Taylor manifests a deadly power, her Gift might tip the scales in the endless war between Heaven and Hell…or it might destroy them both with a single touch.
Nath: First thing first, the cover! What are your thoughts, Brie?

Brie: The first thing I thought was that the “u” in Guardian is smaller than the rest of the letters. I like that it matches the series and that it’s monochromatic. Love the colors and the wings and that the models look like the characters. I don’t like the guy they chose for Michael, though, he’s kind of thin and has Elvis hair. But overall I like it. I don’t really pay much attention to covers and I don’t care if they are not perfect, so I’m fine with it.

Nath: Interesting that the first thing you noticed was the “u.” Although you’re absolutely right... the fact that it’s smaller makes it really weird ^_^; I too like the cover. I like that it matches the last few covers in terms of feel and colors and I also think it’s pretty. I actually quite like the pose the two models are in. As for their physical appearances, while they don’t match what I had in mind -- for the longest time, I thought Michael was black... but turns out it’s his wings and his obsidian eyes, oops LOL -- they do look good. What I would have liked is for Michael to be in a toga, though, and for his sword to be more prominent as it is kind of hidden behind the author’s name.

Brie: Funny you should mention Michael’s small sword, because I also thought it should have been bigger... Let’s stop talking about it, though, it’s starting to sound dirty. I’m sure Michael’s sword is big and powerful and awesome.

Nath: Sure... it sounds so much proper now LOL.

Brie: Let’s talk about the blurb!

The first part says that
“the fate of humanity depends upon a tortured warrior winning the trust—and heart—of the woman he wounded…”

Do you think this refers something that happens in this book? Or maybe to the fact that he tricked her into becoming the new Doyen and all that happened in the past few books?

Nath: Well, I think it’s confession time... While I’m a big fan of the series, I kind of had a mental blockage when it came to Demon Forged. As a result, I didn’t really read it and I’m not totally sure what transpired between Michael and Taylor, Michael bounding himself to her ^_^; However, I would say that the wounding part is the fact that he tricked her and everything that has happened since. What’s your take?

Brie: What? You are a bad fangirl, bad!

Nath: I know, I know!! I really tried reading Demon Forged and I was so excited about its release! But I don’t know, there’s just something about Irena... Sigh.

Brie: Well, I say he tricked her because when he made her into a Guardian he failed to mention that he was also creating a bond between them that would allow her to be the new Doyen.

I don’t think the blurb refers to this, though. I think something happens between them in the new book. Because next it says:
“After a terrifying encounter in Hell destroys her trust in Michael, the Guardian’s powerful leader, former detective Andromeda Taylor is ready to call it quits as one of the angelic warriors and resume her human life again”. What do you think that terrifying encounter is? Last time we saw him he was a dragon, maybe he attacks her? He’s also half demon so maybe she sees that part of him?

Also, I can’t believe you don’t like Irena. She’s so cool, and slightly scary!

Nath: It’s not that I don’t like Irena per se... But there’s just something about her and Alejandro. I can’t pinpoint it, but when it comes to their book. Sigh ^_^;

By the way, you’re really taking apart this blurb! LOL. First, did she know that Michael was part demon? Because it could be a similar reaction as Irena’s. Discovering that the one you look up to is not only a demon, but can also transform into a dragon!? (Brie: I think the dragon part was because of the torture and not an actual power or secret) We’re running out of villains. Who’s left? If I remember correctly, Michael’s sister is out, so that means Lucifer and Belial. I can’t see either of them being so terrifying... but a dragon?. I just think that as a Doyen, Taylor has seen a lot... and for her to want to turn her back on Michael and go back to her “human” life, it’s more than just a terrifying encounter. It must have to do with trust.

Brie: Guardian Demon’s villain has to be Belial --I think--. Although the blurb mentions Lucifer, but we know that blurbs are not to be trusted. Michael's sister is trapped in Chaos, right? I assume she's going to play a role in this book, but I’m not sure. What I do know is that whatever happens at the end, they won’t defeat evil. They can’t kill Lucifer, that would be bad for business!

Nath: I’m still unsure who’s worst, Belial or Lucifer. One thing is sure though, Hell needs a master, so of course, you can’t get rid of both... and facing the evil you know is always better, so I’d get rid of Belial and keep Lucifer.

The next sentence is:
“But when demonic forces threaten her closest friends and she uncovers a terrifying plot devised by Lucifer, Taylor is thrown straight into Michael’s path again…” So I can’t see Taylor being terrified by either Lucifer or Belial. By the way, Taylor has met Lucifer in Demon Angel right? Also, for Taylor to go back to her “human” life, this means Michael is not longer stuck in Hell right? Sigh, my memory is so fuzzy, I really need to re-read the series before Guardian Demon comes out.

Brie: Taylor does know that Michael is half demon, that cat’s been out of the bag for a while now. But I don’t think Taylor and Lucifer have met. She’s been in Hell, though. I assume that Michael gets out of Hell and goes back to his regular body early on in the book, because a romance between Taylor and Dragon-Michael would be weird. I don’t mind kinky, but dragon sex is too much. That part about Taylor going back to her “human” self means that she wants to fall, like Hugh did in the first book. Remember that Guardians have that option.

Nath: I thought perhaps Taylor had met Lucifer in the first book, you know at the end when they wanted to sacrifice Hugh to get access to the portals with his blood. Lucifer chopped off Sir Pup’s heads and Taylor and Preston rescued those... It was quite chaotic, but I think Lucifer was there and Taylor at the same time. So they haven’t met formally, but Taylor has seen him.

And you think Taylor would fall? I guess it makes sense... If she goes back to being human, she can still re-integrate to her old life since not much time has gone by. Also, being a Guardian at the moment isn’t a very attractive prospect, especially given everything she went through.

Oh, by the way, thanks for the dragon-sex image ^_^; I’m pretty sure yes, he goes back to his human form, because I doubt many would follow him otherwise. Plus, how would he get out of Hell?

Brie: Now let’s talk about the most intriguing part of the blurb: "And when Taylor manifests a deadly power, her Gift might tip the scales in the endless war between Heaven and Hell…or it might destroy them both with a single touch."

What do you think it’s her power? I bet it has something to do with the symbols. Although the first thing I thought when I read that part was Sienna from Nalini Singh’s Psy/Changeling books. The “destroy them with a single touch” sounds like she has one of those superpowers of mass destruction.

Nath: My reaction was the same as yours, Brie! For some reasons, I thought about fire... If not, it’d be something like turning stuff into ashes or dust, but I think that’s taking it a bit too literal. So I think that you’re onto something about her power having to do with symbols.

Brie: We could speculate all day, but I’m sure the book will surprise us, or at least I hope so. This is one of those series where I can’t see the twists and revelations coming, and I hope Ms. Brook was saving the best for last. I really can’t wait to read it.

Nath: I’m sure Ms Brook is going to surprise us. And I hope this book concludes the series well. I’m kind of sad it’s ending, though.. I’m happy for Ms. Brook’s success with The Iron Seas series... but the selfish voice in me can’t help but lament over the premature end to the Guardians series :(

Brie: I’m sad the series is ending and I can already hear tiny violins of despair playing behind me. These books are special and I’ve yet to read something that comes close to them. However, I disagree with you regarding the premature ending. Part of what makes the series so good is that it’s planned. This is the land of the never ending book series, and I’m glad this one didn’t follow that path. She’s ending it with a bang and on a high note, instead of stretching it until the original spirit of the books is almost unrecognizable.

Nath: I agree with you that Ms Brook is ending it with a bang, which is always preferable. However, I do feel there were still more stories to be told before Michael’s book. Not that it matters now... All that matters is that May and Guardian Demon get here very soon!!

New Releases - October 2012

Wooohooo, October 1!! I'm so happy we're at the beginning of a new month! I've been in a reading slump the past couple of weeks and one explanation that I have was the poor new releases schedule of September. I mean, there was almost nothing after the first week!! Lucky for me, it looks more spread out in October. By the way, are you ready for Christmas? LOL. I'm always surprised they start releasing Christmas-theme books so early...

Genre: Contemporary Young Adult
Series: connected to Catching Jordan

Ames:  I luuuurved Catching Jordan so I'm really looking forward to Stealing Parker.  It sounds interesting!

Nath: Ms Kenneally impressed me with her debut novel, Catching Jordan. I have to say, I'm not sure about this blurb and Parker's journey, but I'm intrigued. Also, the book still revolves around sport, so that's interesting to me :)

Death and the Girl Next Door by Darynda Jones

High school is not quite as painful as she thinks it will be, and things are as normal as they can be. Until the day the school's designated loner, Cameron Lusk, begins to stalk her, turning up where she least expects it, standing outside her house in the dark, night after night. Things get even more complicated when a new guy—terrifying, tough, sexy Jared Kovach—comes to school. Cameron and Jared instantly despise each other and Lorelei seems to be the reason for their animosity. What does Jared know about her parents? Why does Cameron tell Jared he can't have Lorelei? And what will any of them do when Death comes knocking for real?
Genre:  Fantasy Young Adult
Series:  Darklight, Book #1

Nath: Death and the Girl Next Door is on my radar because the author is Ms Darynda Jones who was one of my favorite new-to-me author in 2011. I'm curious to see how her writing will translate into YA, if it's going to be as funny. It's interesting that "death" will still play a bit role in her YA series.

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan
Published by Hyperion
Annabeth is terrified. Just when she’s about to be reunited with Percy—after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera—it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can’t blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon masthead, Leo’s fantastical creation doesn’t appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans that the visitors from Camp Half-Blood are coming in peace.

And that’s only one of her worries. In her pocket Annabeth carries a gift from her mother that came with an unnerving demand: Follow the Mark of Athena. Avenge me. Annabeth already feels weighed down by the prophecy that will send seven demigods on a quest to find—and close— the Doors of Death. What more does Athena want from her?

Annabeth’s biggest fear, though, is that Percy might have changed. What if he’s now attached to Roman ways? Does he still need his old friends? As the daughter of the goddess of war and wisdom, Annabeth knows she was born to be a leader, but never again does she want to be without Seaweed Brain by her side.
Genre:  Fantasy Young Adult
Series:  Heroes of Olympus #3

Ames:  I'll be picking this one up for my brothers.  :P

Nath: Well, I'll be picking this one up for myself, LOL, and then perhaps, my sister will read it when she's finally caught up on the series :P I'm looking forward to The Mark of Athena and see what adventures Annabeth and Percy are going to face. Also, it's going to be interesting to see the two camps mix! I just hope this book is as good as The Son of Neptune :) Also, is this the first time we truly get Annabeth's POV?

Gideon Cross. As beautiful and flawless on the outside as he was damaged and tormented on the inside. He was a bright, scorching flame that singed me with the darkest of pleasures. I couldn't stay away. I didn't want to. He was my addiction...my every desire...mine.

My past was as violent as his, and I was just as broken. We’d never work. It was too hard, too painful... except when it was perfect. Those moments when the driving hunger and desperate love were the most exquisite insanity. We were bound by our need. And our passion would take us beyond our limits to the sweetest, sharpest edge of obsession...
Genre:Contemporary Romance
Series: Crossfire, Book #2

Monroe: LOVED the first one of this series and cant wait to read this one!!!

Ames:  I was torn over the first one.  I thought it was super hot and the h/h definitely had chemistry.  But I got annoyed with the pattern of them fighting, her running away, him chasing after her.  Hopefully things pick up in this installment.

Hopefully, we can keep it up! If there's a book you'd like to buddy review with one of us, please feel free! :)

In the meantime, today's review is Almost a Scandal by Elizabeth Essex. This book came to my attention when I was looking for new releases for the New Releases post :) It also caught Ames' eye and voila, a buddy review. I love it when it happens! Hope you enjoy!

Genre: Historical Romance
Series: The Reckless Brides, Book #1

The Story: Sally Kent's father and older brothers are all serving the British Royal Navy. As such, nobody understands Richard's, the youngest Kent, desire to become a man of God... And on the eve of his enrollment as a midshipman, Richard runs away. To preserve the family reputation, Sally decides to disguise herself as Richard and takes his place aboard the Audacious. However, family pride is an excuse... Having grown up on a ship and raised in a family of such tradition, Sally yearns for the sea and life on a ship. She also knows that she'll be better at it than Richard too. The only obstacle to her charade is Lieutenant David Colyear, her brother's best friend who has actually spent time at Sally's home and thus, has met her. And indeed, it doesn't take Colyear much time to recognize Sally, who used to tag along in her brothers' adventures - but will he rat her out or keep her secret?

Nath: So Ames, did you enjoy Almost a Scandal? I hope so because I sure did! :)

Ames: You know I did too! It has a cross-dressing heroine and it takes place at sea. Those are two things I absolutely love in my historicals. I don’t know why I enjoy naval adventures so much, but something about that setting really floats my boat. haha

Nath: LOL, nice wordplay! And I know you enjoyed it :) I’m really happy too because as soon as I read the blurb, I thought of you... Perhaps because the setting is quite similar to Sea Change by Darlene Marshall which you absolutely adored :)

As for me, I admit I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Almost a Scandal. I like cross-dressing historicals and it was definitively the key element of the book and Ms Essex sure pulled it off. I liked how Sally had an affinity with the sea, how she loved it and had she been a man, she would have gone into the Navy, just like her father and three older brothers. She has also grown up on a ship and helped her brothers study for the lieutenant examination. With all this, I really believed that Sally could pass as a man and as a midshipman and so the book worked for me :)

Ames: Yes, I loved that aspect of Sally’s character. She was ideally suited to life at sea except for the fact that she was born female. I like how she became a protector to the other young midshipmen on board as well. She wasn’t someone to take something lying down - her character was very much a go-getter. Sometimes that can be unappealing, especially if she’s too goody two-shoes, but Sally was just the right amount of gumption and fortitude.

Nath: Oh yeah, I agree with everything you’re saying Ames :) I thought it was cute that she took the younger boys under her wing, a mix of maternal and older sister instincts. Aside from her guts, you know what else I liked? That she wasn’t a whimpering, simpering, virginal missus. She grew up with brothers, held her own against them, was included in their antics and as a result, not only was she knowledgeable with boats and the navy, but she knew about life and men and that means sex. I really liked that she wasn’t offended when she first stepped on the ship and witnessed the debauchery and instead, joked about it! :) That was definitively refreshing LOL.

As for the romance, I enjoyed it too. I thought the prior connection with the hero was a good idea - it made all the subsequent events more plausible and believable :) And Sally and Colyear made a good couple.

Ames: Yes! I love that she was the younger sister to his friends and actually knew Sally from before. It gives them history. Another thing that made them work so well for me was their partnership. Sally could keep up mentally and could actually predict some of the things he’d need on board. She was a true asset and did not put anyone in jeopardy with her presence.

Now what did you think of Colyear? I liked his character. But I felt that he was somewhat overshadowed by how awesome Sally was. LOL

Nath: The fact the two were equals and matched so well definitively made the romance :) As for Colyear, I like the man he was. I mean, what’s not to like? Fair, upstanding, competent and charismatic :P However, as you said, he was overshadowed by Sally and as a result, I find he wasn’t that well-developed. Although in the scope of things, I didn’t really mind because Almost a Scandal was really Sally’s story. And it was a really good story. I have to say that mid-way through the book, I got a bit confused in the action, especially the part when Sally and Colyear sneaked on the island. However, that really is my only complaint in the book. I liked the way Ms Essex spinned the story around and Sally’s revelation that she is a woman. I also liked we got to see the aftermath when Sally returns home.

Ames: I agree with you about Col. He was a good character, a good man for Sally, and I liked his connection to her family. But it was about Sally. My only complaint about him (and thus the writing) was the overuse of the phrase “damn her eyes” or “damn her fine eyes.” At first it was cute and I liked that he said it, but then it was used too much and even another character used it at one point. That was too much.

I liked the action bit that had to happen for Sally and Col to come together without an audience. It was necessary and it showcased how well they really work together.

I also liked that we saw the aftermath of Sally’s adventure and her going home. I was a bit annoyed at how she reacted to Col’s return though. I wished she’d stood up for herself a bit there.

Nath: It’s funny that you picked up on Col’s “damn her eyes” because I didn’t. Instead, I picked up on Sally’s phrase - which I can't remember at the moment ^_^; But the result is the same, the repetition got tedious and annoying.

Oh and you’re right. The action involving Sally and Col allowed them to come together without an audience. Gotta say, it was a clever move on Ms Essex’ part and much more believable than if they had been able to sneak somewhere on the boat. As you said, it was necessary and well executed.

I liked the reunion with Sally’s family. LOL, so funny how her brothers were all: “It’s not much of an injury.” Men, LOL. The ending with her younger brother was interesting. I liked that it was not kiss and hugs and we forget everything. Instead, both were still a bit angry at each other and they still didn’t see eye to eye; however, family prevailed :)

And what do you mean by wanting her to stand up for herself?

Ames: I found her very passive when she went home. I didn’t like that.

Nath: Oh okay, I know what you mean now :) I agree with you, she was kind of passive, but at the same time, it made sense. She’s come back from a life that she loved, surrounded with people, to an empty house... with a scar on her face. I think what hit the hardest for her is that she was home alone, none of her family was there. This makes it more real. It would have been weird for her to come home and be all happy and cheerful. And what matters in the end is that she stood up again and on her own when she was ready and not because Colyear showed up :)

All in all, I really enjoyed Almost a Scandal. I’m giving it a B+ :) I can’t wait to read William’s story, A Breath of Scandal, which comes out in December! I hope Sally and Colyear make an appearance!!

Ames: I enjoyed Almost a Scandal as well. It was a solid read with a strong heroine and it was set at sea. Win win. I’m giving this a B.

Review: Off the Menu by Stacey Ballis

See, Ames did not lie when she said in The Proposal review that we had some more reviews coming down the line! Today, we're discussing Off the Menu by Stacey Ballis, a book I discovered because I was looking for new releases for our monthly post here at Breezing Through. The cover was just too cute to resist and the blurb was really appealing :) Read our review to see if the book measured up!

Off the Menu by Stacey Ballis
published by Berkley in July 2012
As the executive culinary assistant to celebrity Chicago chef Patrick Conlon, Alana Ostermann works behind the scenes—and that’s just the way she likes it. But with developing recipes for Patrick’s cookbooks, training his sous chefs, picking out the perfect birthday gifts for his ex-mother-in-law, and dealing with the fallout from his romantic escapades, she barely has a personal life, much less time to spend with her combo platter of a mutt, Dumpling.

Then a fluke online connection brings her RJ, a transplant from Tennessee, who adds some Southern spice to her life. Suddenly Alana’s priorities shift, and Patrick—and Dumpling—find themselves facing a rival for her time and affection. With RJ in the mix, and some serious decisions to make about her personal and professional future, Alana must discover the perfect balance of work and play, money and meaning, to bring it all to the table—one delicious dish at a time...
Genre: Chick-lit, Women's Fiction, contemporary

Ames: Nath, thank you for bringing this book to my attention in our July New Releases post. :P This never would have made it onto my radar otherwise and I’m so glad I read this book, I really enjoyed it!

First things first, I want to make a small note to potential readers out there. The blurb kind of insinuates that Alana’s boss, Patrick, is jealous of her new man, and I misread that to be in a romantic way. So in case you get the same idea, that’s not the case. This is not a love triangle where her boss suddenly makes a play for Alana’s affections because there’s another man in the picture. Patrick is jealous, but because he’s no longer the centre of Alana’s world. So just wanted to get that out there. LOL

So Nath, what did you think of the book?

Nath: No problem, Ames :) The blurb just caught my attention and I was happy to share. From the blurb, I too thought Patrick was jealous in a romantic way... and while I’ve never been a fan of love triangle, I was a bit disappointed it wasn’t so. For the rest though, the blurb was pretty spot on :)

Overall, I enjoyed Off the Menu. I thought it was a solid book with a great heroine. I really liked Alana because she felt so real - I think a lot of readers will connect with her. I also liked the fact that she knew what she wanted in life and was happy with her life: a good relationship with her family, working in a field she loves and with an adorable dog to keep her company. I thought it was refreshing that she wasn’t desperate for a man and wasn’t pressed by her biological clock ^_^; Not that I don’t understand, but I don’t think everyone heroine should be that way...

Ames: I am definitely one of those readers that connected with Alana. Even her food dislikes! I read that and my jaw dropped. LOL But I think that’s why I enjoyed this book so much, Alana was such a great character. She had a fulfilling life, a wonderful dog, a great job and the most wonderful circle of family and friends. Those secondary characters really made this book for me.

I like how her and RJ met and his story about why he was on the dating site and how they both waited for free weekends to see who their matches were. I don’t know, everything about the story felt real - like Alana could have been a real woman and I would have loved to be her friend. It just clicked with me.

Nath: Nod nod, as I said, a lot of readers are going to connect with her :)

I enjoyed Alana and RJ’s romance. I liked that it was low-key with very few conflicts. Once again, this aspect of the book felt real. I loved how RJ was understanding as well, he and Alana really complemented each other. I do think it progressed a bit fast, but that’s because of the timeline.

It was also fun to see the two men in Alana’s life - her boss Patrick and dog, Dumpling - become jealous of RJ LOL. I liked Alana’s friendship with Patrick, even if it was a bit dysfunctional :) And Dumpling was simply adorable!

Ames: I loved her relationship with RJ! What got me was the communication. A relationship started with emails is of course going to have great communication but I like how they kept it up after they met. And a part of me kept waiting for the other shoe to drop...I didn’t realize I turned into such a cynic! But RJ was great and I liked the timeline. They both knew what they wanted and they went for it.

I loved how Patrick and Dumpling were both jealous. Dumpling, I can believe the way he was. LOL Animals can be little stinkers when it comes to the person they love. I know Max didn’t like the guys I dated. hehe And the description of Dumpling’s parts and pieces. He was such a Heinz 57 of a dog, I loved it.

Patrick - again, I thought the blurb meant he was jealous romantically. But Patrick was jealous just because he’s selfish and Alana made his life a lot easier. I like the descriptions of how they worked together, how they began work together and when Patrick pulled his jerk move there, I like how Alana laid down the law, and that RJ backed her up.

Another thing, this is a book about culinary people. But I never felt that the food aspects took over. Sometimes I feel an author can get too descriptive in what the characters are cooking, but Ballis did a good job of reining it in and keeping everything relevant.

Nath: I think in that aspect, Ms Ballis did a great job at keeping things balanced. The foodie aspect did not take over the book, but was enough to make us drool; the romance was just perfect and complemented the story which was all about Alana :)

And it’s not that you’re a cynic, it’s just that you were looking for conflict. It’s nice to read a romance like the one in Off the Menu from time to time where everything goes well... but we all know we’d get bored of it if all the books were that way :P

I thought Patrick was really an interesting character and I’d be worried too if I was him to lose Alana, the one person that put up with his crap. I liked the way how Patrick was part of Alana’s family and how he and Dumpling got along LOL.

One more thing that I liked in Off the Menu was the ending, how Maria showed Alana that life is not “or” but can be “and.” She was so focused on making choices that she forgot she could compromise... and I think that’s a great lesson for us :P

I know you loved this book, Ames, and I really went into Off the Menu hoping it’d be the same for me. Overall, I thought Off the Menu was a good, solid book with great writing and really good characters. I really enjoyed the “real” aspect of the book... However, at the end of the day, it didn’t suck me in, it didn’t grab me wholeheartedly... and that’s why I’m giving it a B :)

Ames: Just a B? I’m giving Off the Menu an A-! I really enjoyed almost everything about it and I thought it was a great read. I thought it was refreshing to read about two people who actually communicated with each other. Alana and RJ were great. And all those secondary characters were icing on the cake of fabulousness. LOL

Nath: LOL, reading your description, I feel I should give it a higher grade... But after closing the book, it felt like a B for me, a very strong, solid B :P Just a matter of connection, which could be due to me being tired and jet-lagged ^_^:
