New Releases - September 2013

Wow, hard to believe we're already in September! Summer is almost over, noooooo! :( Although usually, it means that there are a lot of good releases coming up... Unfortunately, it's not the case this year :( I don't know, September feels a bit anemic this year. Yes, we still have quite a lengthy post, but there's a lot more books that are "maybes" than "for sure." Actually, that's how the whole year of 2013 has felt like... Perhaps I should be glad the year is going by so fast...

Let us know if we missed some interesting books!

So where do they draw the line between competition and love? Especially when she doesn't want to lose either the promotion or the guy….
Genre: Category romance, Contemporary
Series: Connected to Her Favorite Temptation

Nath: Ms Mayberry is on my auto-buy list of authors which is why I couldn't wait and actually requested Her Favorite Rival from Netgalley. I should be writing my review very soon :) For now though, I recommend Her Favorite Rival for those who wants to read a solid story :)

Ames:  This one sounds cute.  Sarah is an auto-buy author for me as well.  And I'm glad to hear you recommend it, Nath.

Genre: Contemporary romance, Romantic Suspense
Series: Adrenaline Search & Rescue, Book #2

Nath: Ames and I reviewed the first book of the series, High Risk, earlier this year. I liked the premise of the series and enjoyed the story enough to want to check out High Passion :) Interested to see how the romance between Alisha and Devon will develop!

Ames:  I really like that this series takes place in Canada.  :P  And I'm looking forward to Alisha and Devon's relationship proceeds because they didn't really like each other in High Risk, if I remember correctly.

Nath: There were undercurrents between them, Ames. You cannot annoy each other so much without a good reason... and attraction is a good reason :P

Series: None

Nath: Oh, this wasn't on my radar, but it sounds interesting! The setting sounds good! Let me know how it is, Ames!

Nath: LOL, I'm more interested by the blurb :P

Genre: Historical romance
Series: Sealed with a Kiss, Book #3

Nath: I've read the first book in this series, More Than a Stranger, and enjoyed it. The second book didn't really appeal to me because of the storyline, but I'm interested in Flirting with Fortune. Mostly because I really liked the glimpse of Beatrice that we've got in More Than a Stranger :P Still, this story sounds cute.

Ames:  I don't think I've read this author before but the set-up for this one definitely sounds good.  This one is on my radar now!

Blue by You by Rachel Gibson
published by Harpercollins Publisher (Avon Impulse)

Yeah, it was hot while it lasted, but then he went off to join the Marines, leaving Blue in New Orleans. She's tried to block him from her mind for good, but nothing can really erase the feeling she had when she was with him.

But Kasper knows she's the one woman for him … and now he's got to prove it to her all over again.
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Series: Military Men, Book #1.5 (?)

Ames:  I haven't read a Rachel Gibson in forever!  I think the premise of this one makes it a good place to get back on the RG bandwagon.  I like lovers reunited and Marines.

Nath: I like the cover :P I think I'm going to wait for reviews for this one.

September 10

Fellows is Louisa's only hope of restoring her family's honor—and it is he alone who intrigues Louisa in a way that may be even more scandalous than murder…
Genre: Historical romance
Series: Highland Pleasures, Book #5.5

Nath: I wasn't aware of this novella, probably in preparation for the next installment in the series, The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie, coming out in October... I've disconnected from this series back with The Duke's Perfect Wife, but I'm definitively going to be reading The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie... Perhaps The Untamed Mackenzie is a good book to catch up with the second generation of Mackenzies...

Ames:  I re-read Ian's book a while back and Lloyd was always someone that stood out for me.  He was so angry and for good reason.  But since I haven't exactly kept up with this series (Isabella's was the last one I read) so I don't know if he was ever mentioned again.  I'm looking forward to reading this one.

Nath: Wait, Lloyd was in Ian's book?! I'm all lost now LOL.

Ames:  Yeah, he was the Inspector that was after Ian, remember?

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
published by St. Martin's Press
A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?
Genre: Fiction, Young Adult (?), Contemporary
Series: None

Nath: Ms Rowell has become an author whose books I look forward to because of her writing, but also her uniqueness. What I mean is that she writes the stories that she wants and doesn't follow trend. I'm really looking forward to Fangirl even though I'm a bit apprehensive because I have no idea of the Simon Snow series that is mentioned in the blurb and wonder if it'll affect my enjoyment of the book... Still, my concern has not stopped me from pre-ordering the book LOL.

Ames:  Nath, I think the Simon Snow series is something that the author made up.  And I agree, Rainbow is a very unique writer and I really her enjoy her books and her characters.  I've pre-ordered this one, but I think I need to re-read Attachments in the meantime.  Haha

Nath: Oh! Oh... Well that's one thing less to worry :) Now I can just enjoy the book LOL.

September 15

Nath: From the title, I thought this was another book in the Delicious series!

Ames:  This one sounds hot.  And I love that Wren is a bike messenger!

Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Series: None

Nath: This wasn't on my radar, but it sounds quite good! Thanks Ames!

Ames:  I've been seeing some early reviews for this book and they're good.  They definitely caught my interest.  And it's amazing because both her parents are ALIVE.  I'm sick and tired of the trend in YA to have one parent die.  BLEH.

Nath: I seconded, not that I've been reading that many YA lately...

Nath: Having really been in the mood for historical romance this year, but I'm putting this book on my radar because it's Ms Hunter and the blurb sounds interesting. It's the time period I think :P

Nath: Wow, it feels like it's been a while since Ms Gibson's last release... Her latest books haven't really been working out for me, so I think I'll be waiting for reviews before I pick up Run to You. Still, it's Rachel Gibson and that's why this book is on my radar.

Ames:  This one sounds cute.  I like bartenders and Marines.  haha

Nath: LOL.

Nath: I only pick up anthologies when there's an author I'm interested in who has an entry. In The Sugar Cookie Sweetheart Swap, I'm looking forward to Ms Angell and Ms Kauffman's short stories - two out of three, that's pretty good :P

Nath: I have this one on my radar because it's Ms Sala, but not sure I'll be picking it up. I've had problems with the last few books of hers that I have read... Plus the setting of this one somehow sounds similar to her Storm Front trilogy from a few years ago. Guess I'll wait for reviews before making a decision.

published by Harlequin (Mira)
It begins with a chilling phone call to Casey Woods. And ends with another girl dead.

Call. Kill. Repeat. But the similarities are more than one psychopath's desire to outdo another. As more red-haired victims are added to the body count, it becomes clear that each one has been chosen because of a unique connection to Casey - a connection that grows closer and closer to her.

Now the Forensic Instincts team must race to uncover the identity of a serial killer before his ever-tightening circle of death closes in on Casey as the ultimate target. As the stalker methodically moves in on his prey, his actions make one thing clear: he knows everything about Casey. And Casey realizes that this psychopathic won't stop until he makes sure she's dead.
Genre: Mystery/Thriller, Romantic Suspense
Series: Forensic Instincts, Book #3

Nath: This series hasn't wowed me so far, but there's something about it that I'm enjoying. I'm hoping that this one will be the one, especially since the case is connected to Casey :)

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Series: Wildefire, Book #2

Nath: I've been on the look-out for good romantic suspense books... However, I don't want ex-military characters. Maybe Midnight Lies will be what I'm looking for :) I'm hoping so...

Nath: Confession time, I haven't read the last few books in this series, but yet I'm buying them... What can I say, I'm a collector at heart, Ms Hooper is one of my favorite authors and if these books weren't being re-printed, they'd be really hard to come by... so might as well take advantage of the opportunity :) And who knows... one day, I might read them and then, I'll have them all!

Genre: Paranormal romance
Series: The Guardians, Book #8

Nath: One of my favorite series is coming to an end! NOOOOO! I have a feeling Guardian Demon is going to be bittersweet for me... While I'm excited for the book, I have to say the pairing doesn't do much for me. Probably because I missed their beginning by not reading Demon Forged ^_^; However, it's not going to stop me. I'm curious to see how Ms Brook is going to end it all :) And I hope there is a lot of Hugh and Lilith :)

Ames:  OMG I only ever read the first two books in the series so I feel a re-read coming on so I can catch up!  I have been buying each book as it has been released, so I'll be getting this one.

Series: The Borgias, Book #1

Ames:  I like this author and I always keep an eye out for interesting sounding historicals.  I enjoyed the first season of the Borgias, so it'll be neat to go back to that world.  (I didn't watch season 2 or 3 because of time constraints - thank goodness for netflix and a 4 week vacation coming up!)

Nath: I read the first book in this series, Baby, It's Cold Outside, and wasn't very impressed by it, which is why I did not pick up the second book. However, I'm very interesting and curious about Avery and Roman. I thought they were the couple with the most potential... So I think I will give Just In Time a chance. However, it feels weird to pick up a book with a winter setting in the middle of summer ^_^;

Genre: New Adult
Series: Between the Lines, Book #4

Ames:  I read the first book in this series last year and re-read it this past weekend.  I have the other books in the series and I'm looking forward to reading them.  This one too.  That cover is a big hint though.

Pitch Perfect by Sierra Dean
published by Samhain
Emmy Kasper knows exactly how lucky she is. In a sport with few opportunities for women at the pro level, she’s just landed her dream job as head athletic trainer for the San Francisco Felons baseball team. Screwing up is not an option.

She’s lost in thought as she pedals to the spring training facility, her mind abuzz with excitement as she rounds a corner—and plows head-on into two runners. The end of her career dances before her eyes when she realizes she’s almost run over the star pitcher.

As Tucker Lloyd watches the flustered Emmy escape with his bandana tied around her skinned knee, the view is a pleasant change from worrying about his flagging fastball. At thirty-six, the tail end of his career is glimmering on the horizon. If he can’t pull something extraordinary out of his ball cap, the new crop of rookies could make this season his last.

The last thing either of them needs is a distraction.

The last thing either of them expects is love.
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Series:  Boys of Summer, Book #1

Ames:  The blurb for this one intrigues me.  I like that it's sports and she's in a field that's somewhat rare for women.  I like that kind of job for women.  I haven't read this author before but I'm for sure checking this one out.

Nath: You'll have to let me know if it's good Ames! :)

Ames:  I obsessively read the Rock Chick series in May and June and even though I had some problems with it, I really want to read Ally's story.

Monroe: I'm on the Kristen Ashley train here lately but I haven't read these books yet...guess I should!

Ames:  Yes, definitely.  They're highly addictive.  Just don't read them one after the other like I did.  LOL
Nath: LOL, you guys are scaring me... and Ames, you keep telling me to get on the wagon!

Genre: Fantasy
Series: Temeraire, Book #8

Nath: I'm not up-to-date on this series which is unfortunate because I loooved His Majesty's Dragon and I feel the series had so much potential. Still, every new book in the series is on my radar :) I just can't let go... And I have to add, this cover is really awesome! :) Definitively makes me want to pick up the book!

Ames:  Wow, book 8 already?  I think I stopped halfway through book 3 many moons ago.  I loved His Majesty's Dragon as well.  I stopped buying this series too.  Amazing huh?  I usually keep buying a series even if I'm far behind in it.  LOL

Afterburn by Sylvia Day
published by Harlequin (Cosmo Red Hot Reads)
The realization that Jax still affected me so strongly was a jagged pill to swallow. He’d only been part of my life for five short weeks two years ago. But now he was back. Walking into a deal I’d worked hard to close. And God, he was magnificent. His eyes were a brown so dark they were nearly black. Thickly lashed, they were relentless in their intensity. Had I really thought they were soft and warm? There was nothing soft about Jackson Rutledge. He was a hard and jaded man, cut from a ruthless cloth.

In that moment I understood how badly I wanted to unravel the mystery of Jax. Bad enough that I didn’t mind how much it was going to cost me...
Genre: Contemporary romance, Erotica
Series: ?

Nath: Interesting that Harlequin has another new imprint! :) I hope it will be successful!

Ames:  Well it's a partnership with Cosmo magazine - I think it will be.  And to use Sylvia Day to launch it?  Smart move.  I love Sylvia's writing so I'll definitely be checking this out.

Monroe: Ditto! I love Sylvia Day so I'll check this out!

Nath: I've recently discovered Ms Wood with It Was Only a Kiss. Basically loved everything about it, especially the setting in South Africa. So I'm really looking forward to If You Can't Stand the Heat and hope it'll be a winner! :) While I don't exactly love the pose of the couple on the cover, it is hot... and I really like the colors and the goodies display LOL.

Monroe: hey hey heyyyyy! Lol love the cover!

As friendship and camaraderie lead to sweet seduction and erotic pleasure, dare they believe a bargain born of desperation might lead them both to a love destined to be?
Genre: Historical romance
Series: The Survivors' Club, Book #2

Ames:  The Proposal wasn't a solid winner with me, but even still, I'm looking forward to reading more of the Survivors' Club's stories.

Nath: Ditto what Ames said. One of the reasons I'm looking forward to The Arrangement is that the hero is blind. I have a weakness for flawed characters and I think this will be quite the interesting story :) Can I say though, this cover is really bad ^_^;

Ames:  I don't think flawed is the right word you're looking for here.

Nath: Okay, not flawed, but not perfect... Physical handicap... You know what I mean!

Ames:  I've really enjoyed the first two books in this series, so of course I'm looking forward to more!

Nath: After reading The Newcomer, I was so curious about The Hero that I requested it from Netgalley. As a result, I already read The Hero. Once again, I think that says it all right? :P

Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan
published by Knopf Books for Young Readers

New York Times bestselling author David Levithan tells the based-on-true-events story of Harry and Craig, two 17-year-olds who are about to take part in a 32-hour marathon of kissing to set a new Guinness World Record—all of which is narrated by a Greek Chorus of the generation of gay men lost to AIDS.

While the two increasingly dehydrated and sleep-deprived boys are locking lips, they become a focal point in the lives of other teen boys dealing with languishing long-term relationships, coming out, navigating gender identity, and falling deeper into the digital rabbit hole of gay hookup sites—all while the kissing former couple tries to figure out their own feelings for each other.

This follow-up to the bestselling Every Day showcases David's trademark sharp-witted, warm-hearted tales of teenage love, and serves as a perfect thematic bookend to David's YA debut and breakthrough, Boy Meets Boy, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2013.
Genre: Young Adult, M/M
Series: Connected to Every Day

Ames:  I really enjoy David's writing so even though I'm not entirely sold on the concept of the book, I'm looking forward to this one.  :P

Genre: Young Adult, Sci-Fi
Series: None

Nath: I'm a fan of Ms Patrick, so that's how this book ended up on my radar. The concept of Just Like Fate seems to be very popular at the moment, very similar to Pivot Point by Kasie West, and I'm curious to see how Ms Patrick pulls it off. It's even more interesting as it seems each other will take one alternative... Hope this book will be a winner :P

Buddy Review: Wait for You by J. Lynn

Wait For You by J. Lynn
Self-published in February 2013
Some things are worth waiting for...

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing...

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet...

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…
Genre:  New Adult
Series:  Wait For You #1

The story: Avery Morgansten is attending college thousands of miles away from home to escape what happened to her five years ago. She wants to be as far away from home and the memories that come with it. She wants to move on with her life. But things don’t always happen the way that you want them to. She hasn’t gotten over what happened to her and meeting the charming and super sexy Cam Hamilton doesn’t change that.

When Cam comes into her life, Avery is thrown because she wasn’t planning on diving into a relationship. She’s a mess but when Cam refuses to go away, she decides to enjoy it but when her problem from back home doesn’t go away, Avery’s world comes crashing down and threatens the new life she’s building.

Rowena: So, I loved this book. What did you think?

Ames: I thought this book was ok. I did not connect with Avery and the only saving grace to me was Cam and his infinite patience and understanding. I thought that although Avery's character did grow, it was too little too late for me.

Rowena: I guess where Avery is concerned, I was much more interested in finding out what the heck happened five years ago on Halloween night and knew that it had to have been pretty big because Avery was a complete mess in this story. I wanted to know about the big bracelet that she never takes off. I wanted to know where the hell her parents were and why they weren’t more supportive of her. I wanted to know why she was acting the way that she was acting so while I did have my frustrations with her characters, I didn’t let them get to me. I wanted to understand so I let her slide with a bunch of stuff but like you, she frustrated the hell out of me sometimes.

Cam was an amazing addition to this story. He was one of those guys that makes people sit up and take notice. His charm and his personality shines through in everything that he does and he’s not a dick. He’s a college guy that acts like a college guy but he’s also a nice guy. I loved the way that he was with Avery. How patient he was and the way that he was always there for her. I want my own Cam!

Ames: I guessed what happened to Avery early on in the story, even what was under that bracelet. And omg I hated her parents!! And her cousin. Like how horrible were they? Sheesh. My frustration with Avery's character was that she wasn't a fighter about her situation. If she had said a big eff you to everyone after what happened, that would have made me like her better. Even going away for college, that would have been a perfect jumping off point for her to reclaim herself. But she was too battered to use that chance to start over until too late in the story. And hello! Colleges have student services to help with stuff like what she went through.

I want my own Cam too. He really was the perfect guy.

Rowena: I hear you about the whole Avery thing. It did get annoying some times and I did wish that she fought a little more for herself and everything so I get you. I hated her parents too. Even her Dad. We see her Dad come around in the end but for me, that was too little, too late. She went through the wringer for a long time and he just sat by, letting it all happen. Letting her go through all of that alone. He was the adult in that situation and he didn’t speak up for her when she needed him to? We’re supposed to forgive all of that because he came outside and gave her that fake, too late apology (did he even apologize? I can’t remember)...ugh.

I think she was ignorant about everything. She lived through it all by herself and she was scared because of the NDA she signed. She probably thought she was going to get into serious trouble if she said anything to anyone so she dealt with it all by herself. I mean, if you think about it...she refused to fill Cam in on anything until she just about lost him.

But damn, that Cam. Loved him. There wasn’t any part of him that I didn’t like. Well, when he finally lets Avery have it for shutting him out at every turn, my first thought was FINALLY! I thought it took him far too long to get to that point. I was already hoping for that explosion for 100 pages before it finally happened. Alright, I gotta know…who’s book are you looking forward to more, Jase and Teresa or Brit’s?

Ames: You know what I liked about Cam? His pet turtle. LOL And how much he cared about his younger sister. *swoon*

I get what Avery was going through, and she was only 14 when everything went down and so that's 4 years of being in that mind-set, I just wanted to see a bit more fight from her. I do realize because all the people in her life who should have cared about her turned their backs on her almost made it hard for her to open up again. It just bugged me. I just recently read a book too where the heroine had something similar happen to her when she was 16 and she used that opportunity to turn her whole life around. That's something I wanted from Avery. Ah well. Wait for You was well written though. As much as Avery annoyed me, I kept reading because I did want to see her open her eyes and see who was standing in front of her. And I wanted to read more of Cam.

I want to see more from Jase and Brit. I liked Avery and Cam's friends.

Rowena: I loved the way Cam was with his family and the way he was with his friends. And I loved his turtle too. And that he got Avery one too. You know, Cam was almost too perfect and sometimes for me, that could be a problem but I thought J. Lynn did a fabulous job of making us fall in love with Cam without making him too good to go be true (even though he probably is but I don’t care, I love him!). He was an interesting character and a swoonworthy love interest. One of my favorites, scratch that, my favorite love interest of the summer so far.

I was kind of hoping that Jase’s story would be with Brit but I’m curious to find out what happens between him and Cam’s sister, Teresa. Should be an interesting story. Will you be interested in continuing this series?

Who do you think Brit is going to end up with? Someone new or...Ollie?

Ames: I think Ollie is too goofy to be paired up with Brit. But I think Jase and Teresa could be interesting.

All right, because Avery was such a downer, I have to give Wait For You a C. It was just ok overall for me. What about you?

Rowena: I want to see Ollie grow up and I think him being paired with Brit would be good…for him. =) I’m looking forward to reading Jase and Teresa’s story. Like I’m anxious to read it. I really adored this story and came to like Avery and for that, I’m giving this an A.

For July, Rowena and I will be reading the Hot Summer Nights anthology.
