New Releases - September 2014

Happy Labour Day everyone! I'm not sure about the States, but here in Canada it's a long weekend for us. Woohoo!  I plan on taking advantage of the beautiful day because it's going to start getting cold soon.

September has an interesting mix of books. But contemporary romances still seem to be in the majority. I have no complaints because that's what I'm interested in reading. As always, please let us know which books you're looking forward to. :P

Nath: If I'm not wrong, She's so Over Him is Ms Wood's debut novel and is now being re-released with Harlequin. As a fan, I'm going to get it of course :)

Haunted by Kay Hooper
published by Berkley
When Deacon James’s younger sister Melanie calls him, terrified, he goes to her aid in the small Georgia town of Sociable. What he finds is a scared young woman in the grip of what she insists is a paranormal nightmare—and murder. Two local men have been killed under mysterious circumstances. And Melanie is the prime suspect.

Trinity Nichols left a high-stress job for quiet, small-town life. But news of the murders has left her—and the town—on edge, especially when there is nothing remotely ordinary about how the men died. And her investigation is yielding more than she bargained for, including a group of strangers who have descended on Sociable, some with abilities Trinity finds hard to believe, and agendas she refuses to trust. For some reason, they know a lot more than they should about what’s happening in town. And what’s happening is growing stranger by the minute.

Now Trinity, Deacon, and this odd band of FBI agents must work together to solve a series of disturbances so incredible that Trinity, and the town of Sociable, will be changed forever. She just isn’t certain who—or what—will be left standing when it’s all over.
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Series: Bishop/FBI SCU, Book #15

Nath: Yes, yes, yes!! Haunted is the book that will make my September :) I love Ms Hooper's writing and this series. This one sounds like a good one :) I wonder which agents will be present... Can't wait for my pre-order copy to arrive! This also conclude the current trilogy... I sure hope Ms Hooper will continue!

Ames: I know I haven't read all the novellas out there that belong to the Mercy Thompson series so I'm looking forward to this one. It'll have to tide me over until the next full length novel comes out. :P

Nath: I like these compilation book because it completes a series very well :)  Four new novella is pretty good and like Ames, I haven't read all the others.

Wickedly Dangerous by Deborah Blake
published by Berkley
Known as the wicked witch of Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga is not one woman, but rather a title carried by a chosen few. They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one of them…

Older than she looks and powerful beyond measure, Barbara Yager no longer has much in common with the mortal life she left behind long ago. Posing as an herbalist and researcher, she travels the country with her faithful (mostly) dragon-turned-dog in an enchanted Airstream, fulfilling her duties as a Baba Yaga and avoiding any possibility of human attachment.

But when she is summoned to find a missing child, Barbara suddenly finds herself caught up in a web of deceit and an unexpected attraction to the charming but frustrating Sheriff Liam McClellan.

Now, as Barbara fights both human enemies and Otherworld creatures to save the lives of three innocent children, she discovers that her most difficult battle may be with her own heart…
Genre: Paranormal romance
Series: Baba Yaga, Book #1

Nath: Initially, I wasn't too sure about Wickedly Dangerous. I like witches and the spin on Russian fairy tales was intriguing... After reading the prequel novella, Wickedly Magical, I was convinced :) I really enjoyed it and as such, my expectations for Wickedly Dangerous are now quite high :)

Night's Honor by Nalini Singh

While his true nature frightens Tess, she can’t ignore the appeal of his innate sense of integrity and self-restraint. Thrown into Xavier’s world, Tess must quickly learn to navigate the dangers—both to her life and to her heart. But the biggest threat comes from her own past…
Genre: Paranormal romance
Series: The Elder Races, Book #7

Ames: I re-read Dragon Bound not too long ago so I should really continue on with this series. LOL But I'm taking my sweet time. I'm still buying this one though, gotta keep up for that day when I glom this whole series. It'll happen!

Nath: Hmmmm. I read this series on and off and right now, not sure I will pick up Night's Honor. I haven't read the Vampyre books of the series and seriously, that cover... I keep thinking the title is Night's Terror ^_^;

The Winter Long by Seanan McGuire
published by Penguin (DAW)
Toby thought she understood her own past; she thought she knew the score.

She was wrong.

It's time to learn the truth.
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Series: October Daye, Book #8

Nath: It seems like authors have given each other's the word to tie up some loose ends :) That's what Ms McGuire is doing with The Winter Long, hence the very cryptic blurb. I'm curious to know what is the truth, so I'll definitively be picking this one up :)

House Immortal by Devon Monk

The secrets that Tilly must fight to protect are hidden within the very seams of her being. And to get the secrets, her enemies are willing to tear her apart piece by piece…
Genre: Fantasy
Series: House Immortal, Book #1

Nath: I've always wanted to read Ms Monk`s books, but for some reasons, I get a block with her Allie Beckstrom series. So House Immortal is my chance :) It sounds interesting, so we'll see how it goes...

Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Rock Kiss, Book #1

Ames: I loooove Nalini's writing (she pulled me out of an epic slump in July) and she does not disappoint with her latest contemporary romance. I've already read it and I highly recommend it.

Nath: It's Nalini Singh. That's enough for me to pick up Rock Addiction :)

Make it Right by Megan Erickson
published by Harpercollins Publisher (William Morrow)
Max Payton lives by two rules:
Size and strength win any fight, and never show weakness.

When a rash of assaults sends Bowler University for a tail spin, Max volunteers to help teach a self-defense class. One of the other instructors is the beautiful pixie-faced girl he keeps butting heads with…and who challenges everything he thought he knew.

Lea Travers avoids guys like Max - cocky jocks who assume she's fragile because of a disability caused by a childhood accident. She likes to be in control, and something about being with Max makes her feel anything but. But during the moments he lets his guard down, Lea sees a soul as broken inside as she is outside. Trusting him is a whole other problem...

When the assaults ramp up and hit close to home, Lea and Max must learn, before it’s too late, that true strength can come from vulnerability…and giving in to trust is sometimes the only way to make things right.
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary
Series: Bowler University, Book #2

Ames: Wena and I just reviewed book 1 and we both gave it a B. Max and Lea were both introduced in book 1. Max comes off as a bit of a jerk so I'm interested to see how the author turns his character around.

What the twins don't realize is that they each have only half the story, and if they could just find their way back to one another, they’d have a chance to remake their world.
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary
Series: none

Ames: I read and enjoyed Jandy's debut book, The Sky is Everywhere. I've always kept an eye out for her next book and I'm so glad to say it's finally arrived.

Nath: Gotta say, the blurb sounds intriguing :)

Ames: Ok, the set up for this one sounds a bit crazy, but I've read Mira Lyn before and I have faith that she can pull it off.

September 22

Snow Falling on Bluegrass by Molly Harper
published by Simon & Schuster (Pocket Star)
Kentucky Tourism Commission employee and executive assistant extraordinaire Kelsey is known around the office for having everything under control. So it’s not surprising that she and her boss, Sadie, have everything planned to the second for the office winter retreat. But there are things even Kelsey can’t micromanage.

An unprecedented snowstorm smothers half of Kentucky and knocks out the power, closes the roads, and generally shuts down the state. Luckily, the lodge has working fireplaces and enough food to keep the staff from turning on each other like something out of The Shining. Kelsey wouldn’t mind being stuck inside if it wasn’t for the tension with her not-so-secret crush, Charlie, the office’s statistician. But handsome Ranger Luke, the lodge’s only employee on hand, is there to take Kelsey’s mind off her discomfort.

Even though this weekend is supposed to be a planning session for KTC, Kelsey can’t help her mind from wandering and finds herself conflicted over Luke and Charlie. Someone’s love will keep her warm, but whose will it be?
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Bluegrass, Book #3

Ames: The cover of this book reminds me that winter is coming. NOOOOO it's too soon!! LOL Believe me, when it gets to -50 (C AND F) I need no reminders what's around the corner. Seriously, end of September and things get cold here. Anyway, I think this sounds cute and I honestly don't mind love triangles. Plus Molly is a good solid writer.

Nath: Ugh Ames, you had to remind me of winter... Hopefully, it won't be a bad one this year! But we probably just jinxed ourselves LOL.

I've read the first book in this series. I like Ms Harper, so I'm probably going to pick up this one :)

September 23

He might break her. He also might be her dream come true.
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Unfinished Hero, Book #4

Ames: Ok, I admit I haven't read KA as much recently but I still look forward to whatever she writes. This series isn't my favourite, the hero of book 1 is a freaking pimp. But still...It's KA.

September 30

Especially not with his beautiful ex-wife creeping around, angling to reunite ever since he rescued a group of teens and became a local hero.

But when the wedding festivities take an unexpectedly passionate turn, Em figures it was just one crazy night. Jack is too gorgeous, too popular, to ever end up with her. So why is she the one he can talk to about his deep, dark feelings? If Em is going to get her dream man, she'll have to start by believing in him…
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Blue Heron, Book #4

Ames: I don't think I've read any books in this series but this blurb...it intrigues me. I'm a sucker for punishment but I like when exes are in the picture to stir some shit up. Only in fiction. I do not have time for that kind of drama in real life. LOL

Nath: Ames, reviews and opinions for the Blue Heron series have been all over the place, so it's hard to get an accurate feel... I know I enjoyed the last book, Waiting on You, and that's why I'm going to give In Your Dreams a try.

Will it bring her deeper into Cole's heart, or will it be the end of Olivia's days in little Lucky Harbor?
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Lucky Harbor, Book #11

Ames: Jill is an autobuy author for me. I should read her books already. Just kidding! I've read some. LOL

Nath: LOL. I like to pick up Lucky Harbor books when I don't know what to read, so He's so Fine is definitively on my list... especially since early reviews have been very favorable.

Cool as a Chicago winter, private events planner Cara DeLuca is a model of self-control... until she meets the one temptation she can't resist: Shane Doyle. Now as the annulment date nears and long-buried secrets are revealed, Shane will have to fight for the one thing guaranteeing the perfect life he craves... the current Mrs. Shane Doyle.
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Hot in the Kitchen, Book #2

Nath: It looks full of drama, but there's something that pulls me to this book. Probably the fact that the hero is a pastry chef LOL. On my radar, will see whether or not I get it...

Hope Burns by Jaci Burton

Can the two of them face down the past and work together toward the possibility of love and happiness in Hope?
Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Hope, Book #3

Nath: I wasn't impressed with the first book in this series, Hope Flames, but I'm somewhat curious with Molly and Carter's story. Plus, with the Lucky Harbor series coming to an end, I need to find a new go-to-series.

Genre: Contemporary romance
Series: Rock Kiss, Book #1.5

Ames: Eeeee! TWO Nalini books in one month!! And Thea and David are interesting characters.

Hey Nath! I made the same decision about the Devon Monk book. I'm going to try this new series.
